Living with anxiety can be an exhausting and isolating experience. Whether it’s general anxiety or a fear of something specific, anxiety can take a major toll on your mental, emotional and physical health. Anxiety can cause your mind to spin in circles and force you to constantly think of all the possible terrible situations that might happen to you or your loved ones. Anxiety causes us to live in a “fight or flight” state, which can make it feel impossible to rest or relax. You may have a great deal of difficulty trusting others and feel as though you constantly have to be in control. Even when you’re completely exhausted, it can still feel really impossible to let things go.
Anxiety is common to many people
There are several types of anxiety disorders. Some people experience generalized anxiety, which is constantly with you about a variety of things throughout the day. Feeling tense and uncertain is a daily, ongoing event and, if left untreated, ultimately becomes a way of life. You may have forgotten what it is like to have a “normal” day. Some people suffer from anxiety-induced panic attacks. The physical symptoms of a panic attack include shortness of breath, sudden nausea, numbness in the hands, and a racing heart. This can be intense and scary, in fact, may people feel like they might be dying. Even if you have never suffered from a panic attack, you may still be experience a level of anxiety that is harmful to your mind, body, and emotions.
Some people recognize that they have felt anxious for most of their lives. Others begin to feel anxiety because of a major change, event or loss in their lives. Sometimes it can be extremely difficult to identify what is triggering anxiety on your own. Sometimes we can be anxious because we are starting a new job, but instead of being aware of that, we worry that the swollen glands you feel mean you have cancer.

Can’t I Just Talk to Friends and Family?
If you have supportive friends and family, you may wonder why you would need outside help. Working with a therapist is unique and effective because it’s set up to be safe and confidential while you share deeply personal experiences. Being a trained, skilled therapist I can offer you lasting solutions to your worries and anxiety. Although having friends and family to talk to is great, they don’t have the ability to help you identify your triggers, handle your anxiety, and gain new skills. People don’t usually just “get anxious” — there are always reasons.
I’m Concerned About the Cost of Anxiety Treatment
I believe that therapy is an investment in your emotional, physical, and mental well-being. What might your anxiety be keeping you from? I recommend that you try at least six sessions and then evaluate your progress. You can learn new tools, apply them, and see if you feel some relief. You are in charge of your own therapy and I can customize your treatment for your needs and schedule. Therapy doesn’t have to last forever. Even a few sessions can help you gain tools to start to manage your anxiety.
I Don’t Want to Take Medication
This is a personal decision. Medications often improve mood and can be an important part of a treatment plan. A referral to a psychiatrist can be discussed, however, if you are opposed to medication, we will find a way to manage your anxiety through talk and behavioral therapy. Either way, you can understand and manage your anxiety.
